BAGHDAD - A Mobile Advisory and Training Team (MATT) from Denmark conducted a train-the-trainer course at the Iraqi School of Military Communications (SMC) in Baghdad, Iraq from Sept 1 to 9, 2024, wrapping up three weeks of intense training throughout the year focusing on communications repair and maintenance.
This latest training session, for 15 Iraqi students, provided in-depth knowledge and skills on the operation of the devices as well as enhancing the quality of instructor skills in modern methodologies. The first two weeks of training were held in January and March when NATO Mission Iraq's (NMI) Training Development Division (TDD) conducted two basic courses for electrical and measurement devices.
During the first week, students learned the basic principles of electronics, setting up various circuits on an experimental board. The multimeter was introduced to measure multiple electrical properties while a soldering/desoldering techniques station was utilised to train the students on a core skill of electrical engineering.

The second week began with in-depth training on the oscilloscope and various measurement techniques on test boards. Furthermore, instructors presented cable test procedures for ‘Harris’ radios and the students tested several cables themselves before making their own antennas and carrying out measurements with a spectrum analyser.
In the third and final week, students were able to take on the role of instructors and pass on their knowledge of electrical and measurement devices. The NMI advisors and MATT instructors evaluated the training sessions and provided feedback, enabling the students to gain experience as future trainers and deepen their understanding.
The course successfully achieved its training objectives and strengthened the bond between NMI and Iraqi signal/maintenance institutions. Overall, this partnership has led to substantial improvements in professional military education, operational readiness and overall military effectiveness.
The Iraqi School of Military Communications conducts technical training for all Iraqi Signals Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers throughout their career. The Communications Factory, on the other hand, provides maintenance and repair services of radio systems for all Iraqi Armed Forces. Modern electronic measuring devices and up-to-date specialist knowledge are crucial to fulfilling both demanding outputs. In 2022, SMC received several state-of-the-art electrical and measurement devices, but no instruction opportunities were in place. Consequently, NMI Advisors recognised the requirement for further schooling and incorporated the training sessions.
