NATO Mission Iraq participates in 2nd School Commanders Conference in Taji

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Iraqi Ministry of Defence and NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) participated in the 2nd School Commanders Conference at the Tactical Training and Special Combat School in Taji, Iraq on May 16 to 17, 2023.

For two days, all school commanders of the different Branch and Service Schools, as well as the directorates of the Ministry of Defence, discussed future projects and cooperation with the NMI Training Development Division (TDD). The aim of the conference was to promote a personal exchange and to provide a forum for future projects.

The partnership between NMI and Iraqi counterparts was the focus of the first day with discussions on a System Approach to Training and other enhanced training methods, as well as the school’s development with regard to cross-branch cooperation and cross-unit collaboration.

The Second day concentrated on the training and development of faculty and instructors. During a short visit to the Instructor Development Course, the commanders were able to see for themselves the results of the cooperation between NMI and their schools.

The Training Development Division, led by Brigadier General Willer, advises Iraqi Branch and Service Schools in the areas of curriculum, faculty, and institutional development. Over the past year, the TDD advisors, together with their Iraqi counterparts have drawn up individual School Development plans for each Branch and Service School, which identifies and defines the common objectives and the corporate way to achieve them. Guided by this plan, the advisors are able to facilitate further target-oriented cooperation between NMI and the schools, and to sustainably pursue common intentions.

The cooperation between NMI and Iraq strives for a long-term and interoperable partnership. Reliable exchange and the consistent communication at eye level between partners are essential components in order to achieve a relationship based on trust – a value held high within NATO Mission Iraq.
