Focusing on human security is an important crisis-management tool that can strengthen resilience of society. Building the capacity to effectively protect civilian populations under times of crisis is of high importance to the Iraqi security institutions.
The Crisis Management and Protection of Civilians workshop, organised by the Iraqi Prime Minister's National Operations Centre and supported by NMI, brought together representatives from the international community including UNAMI, ICRC, Save the Children, CIVIC and several other NATO capacities to support the Government of Iraq in this endeavour. A comprehensive approach along with open dialogue, interaction and cooperation between military institutions and non-military organisations is vital to ensuring the success of any Crisis Management plan.
NATO draws on the expertise of its 30 nations and operational partners in the field of crisis management and continues to push for an increased focus on Human Security agenda. NMI is the first NATO mission with a dedicated Human Security capacity, building on the organisation's extensive experience and lessons learned in the Protection of Civilians.
