NATO Mission Iraq and the Iraqi Ministry of Defence hold Strategy and Policy workshop

BAGHDAD - NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) in collaboration with the Iraq Ministry of Defence Planning Directorate hosted a Strategy and Policy workshop from Apr. 4 – 7, 2021, a key milestone on the journey to update the Iraqi Defence-level Strategy and Policy.

This is our second workshop with the Iraqi Ministry of Defence and it has been hugely successful

During the four days, more than 40 Iraqi specialists in defence planning from all areas of the Ministry of Defence, worked side by side with NMI Advisors, sharing their common knowledge and expertise to develop the next version of the Iraqi Defence-level Strategy and Policy. The workshop used proven academic methodologies as a framework to guide the participants through undertaking risk management analysis and also in designing Defence-level objectives, concepts and the resources required to achieve them.

“This is our second workshop with the Iraqi Ministry of Defence and it has been hugely successful. The first workshop in February focused on understanding the strategic environment. This second workshop has built on that work and designed key objectives, along with the ways and means to achieve them,” said Group Captain Steve Chappell, the senior NMI Advisor on Strategy and Policy from the Ministerial Advisory Division. “Developing Defence Strategy and Policy is a demanding process for any Nation. However, as a multi-national mission, NMI has leveraged the variety of experience from its members to help the Iraqi Defence in this endeavour,” he added.

One of the aims of NATO Mission Iraq is to support the Iraqi security ministries in developing an achievable and sustainable military force structure through civilian-military cooperation and engagement. Furthermore NMI is expanding NATO’s assistance in providing training in military schools and institutions in order to help Iraq build and sustain more effective, transparent and inclusive national security structures and institutions.
