Supreme Allied Commander Europe visits NATO Mission Iraq

BAGHDAD – Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) General Tod D. Wolters travelled to Baghdad on Dec. 3 - 4, 2020 to visit NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) and meet with Iraqi leadership.

During his visit, General Wolters met with Iraqi Minister of Defence, Juma Anad Saadoun, to discuss how to enhance the joint effort between NATO and Iraq in strengthening the Iraqi security sector. The Minister of Defence emphasised the importance of NATO’s work in Iraq and expressed his support of expanding the mission, which was agreed upon by Allied Defence Ministers in October 2020.

During the following meeting between SACEUR and the Commander of NMI, Lieutenant General Per Pugholm Olsen highlighted that NATO and Iraq’s cooperation is creating a solid foundation for a safe and secure Iraq.

NATO Mission Iraq is a non-combat mission providing training and advising to the Iraqi Defence institutions at the request of the Iraqi government. NMI personnel are working closely together with Iraq to strengthen the Iraqi Defence institutions and contributing to global security.
