Chief Warrant Officer S.V. (Steve) Merry began his career in the Canadian Forces in April 1987. Upon completing basic recruit and TQ 3 Infantry training, CWO Merry was posted to the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Esquimalt British Columbia. He remained at Work Point Barracks until 1993 serving in a number of positions within Rifle Companies and Mortar Platoon.
In July of 1993 CWO Merry was posted to the 2nd Commando, Canadian Airborne Regiment in Petawawa Ontario. CWO Merry was posted to the Canadian Airborne Centre in Edmonton Alberta in July 1995 and remained in Edmonton with the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian light Infantry until July of 2001 when he was posted to the Infantry School in Gagetown New Brunswick working with the Small Arms and Common Army Phase cells.
CWO Merry returned to Edmonton in 2004 and was posted to the 1st Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He served with the Battalion in many capacities including Sergeant Major Rear party for Task Force 3-09 and as the Battalion’s Quarter Master Senior Instructor until August 2011.
From August 2011 until June of 2012 CWO Merry attended the year Long French course and following the course he was appointed Regimental Sergeant Major for the Canadian Forces Land Advanced Warfare Centre in Trenton, Ontario.
In April 2015 CWO Merry was appointed as the Force Sergeant Major for the Multinational Force and Observers Mission Sinai Penninsula, Egypt where he served a one-year tour of duty until July of 2016. In July of 2016 CWO Merry was appointed as the Canadian Army and Support Occupations CWO Career Manager within Director General Military Careers Ottawa.
CWO Merry has served on seven tours on deployed Operations; Cyprus 1988, Croatia 1992-1993, Bosnia 1997 and 2000, Afghanistan 2006 and 2008, Sinai Egypt 2015-2016.
In July 2017 CWO Merry was appointed and assumed his duties as the Division Sergeant Major with the 1st Canadian Division in Kingston. He was subsequently nominated to his present position as Command Senior Enlisted Leader for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation Mission Iraq, the position which he assumed on 31 October 2018.
