NATO Strategic Direction South Hub hosts Women Peace and Security Workshop

Naples, Italy - The NATO Strategic Direction South Hub (NSD-S HUB) hosted a workshop titled “Libya and Tunisia: Female Leaders and Female Role Models, to increase stability and security in the region”. The workshop was held in Pozzuoli, Naples, Italy on June 29, 2023.

Lieutenant General Vasco Angelotti, JFC Naples Chief of Staff, and Aydin KILIC, HUB Director, attended the event.

The Workshop was organized in the framework of the Women Peace and Security (WPS) activities of the NSD-S Hub, in cooperation with the Union of Mediterranean Universities (UNIMED). The WPS expert of the Hub, Dr.Erika Monticone, was the Officer Project Responsible for the event.

Regional Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) discussed how to leverage the position of women leaders in Libya and Tunisia, and how to better support their contribution to stability and security across the wider region.

The Workshop hosted a diverse group of women leaders from the region, who provided their insights and experience from different backgrounds such as government, academia and society._nato4

The Workshop is in line with the new NATO’s approach of the 2022 Strategic Concept when, in the Madrid Summit Declaration, issued by NATO Heads of State and Government participating in the meeting of the North Atlantic Council, it was declared that a robust Women, Peace and Security agenda, incorporating gender perspectives, is to be advanced across NATO.

NATO believes that stability, security, and peace can only flourish when women are empowered to work together with their governments, own communities and internationally in diplomacy, conflict prevention and mediation.

The NSD-S HUB is a framework to better understand challenges and threats emanating from Africa and the Middle East and improve NATO’s awareness and understanding of the opportunities and challenges from those regions, while contributing to the overall coordination of NATO’s activities and efforts.
