LAGO PATRIA, Italy - The Center for Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance (CFE-DM ) in partnership with JFCNP J9, the NATO Crisis Management and Disaster Response Center of Excellence (Sofia, Bulgaria), organized for the second year a training event in JFCNP titled Complex Emergencies, Protection and Deconfliction (CEPD 2020).

The event, that also saw the participation of key actors from the

International Humanitarian Community, started with a Senior

Leaders’ Seminar and then continued with a training program from January 14 to 16, 2020. The course has provided 49 military and civilian personnel in JFCNP and other NATO Commands, operational-level training and focused discussions on Humanitarian Assistance, Protection and Deconfliction mechanisms. An important part of the dialogue with the training facilitators involved the understanding of how NATO can contribute to the International Community efforts a to protect civilians in the context of today’s complex emergencies.

In particular, at the end of the training, participants gained an increased understanding and a better knowledge of the following

outcomes:

• Complex Emergencies trends and challenges.

• Missions and mandates of key actors form the International               Humanitarian Community.

• Appropriate coordination mechanisms for dialogue and interaction     between international Humanitarian Agencies and NATO.

• How best to mitigate civilians suffering during complex emergencies through the comprehensive implementation of the PoC Framework.

• Humanitarian notification systems for de-confliction in complex emergencies.
