NAPLES, Italy - More than 100 students from Novio Atellano and G.B. Basile Middle Schools located in Frattaminori and Giugliano respectively in Campania, southern Naples learned about NATO on January 21st, 2019 at Allied Joint Force Command Naples.
"NATO is a multinational unit for peace. It is an amazing structure and I feel safe and secure being here,” said 13-year-old Maria Lettiero, from the Novio Atellano School.
Students and teachers visited the modern base the first time.
JFC Naples has been here since 2012.
After a welcome by the JFC Naples Staff, the students attended a briefing on the command’s history, functions, and tasks.
"I’ve learned today that NATO doesn’t attack. Its commitment is mainly based on peacekeeping and dialogue,” said 13-year-old Biagio Palumbo from G. B. Basile in Giugliano.
Students got an overview on the NATO structure, the Joint Operations Center’s activities, the role of NATO civilians, and cyber security.
The Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Luciano Portolano, addressed them and answered their questions.
"I’ve seen a lot of different nations here. It is the first time I’ve seen so many different nations in uniform. It is impressive,” said 12-year-old Francesca Aversano from the Novio Atellano School.
The participants toured the Community Center and saw the Morale and Welfare Activities facility.
"My school is close to the base and I used to come in the area but today was the first time I went in. I feel lucky because I don’t think to have the same opportunity later, it is a unique experience,” said 13 year old Michele Esposito of G. B. Basile.
This school visit is part of JFC Naples Community relations activities.
