NAPLES, Italy – Students and teachers from Alfonso Gallo High School, located in the Caserta district of Aversa got a taste of NATO life during a May 8 visit to Allied Joint Force Command Naples.
Event organizers said the visit of the approximately 100 students and faculty to JFC Naples is an example of NATO’s efforts to establish positive cultural and social exchanges with the external community and to strengthen the relationship with local and regional institutions.
The students and teachers were given the opportunity to participate in the Victory in Europe Day and listen to the speech of U.S, Navy Admiral James Foggo, JFC Naples commander.
Students were able to get an overview on the history, capabilities and missions of JFC Naples. Current topics, such as the Joint Operation Center activities, the role of the civilians within NATO and cyber security, were also touched on.
Italian Army Colonel Giancarlo Turco, Base Support Group Commander, welcomed the students on behalf of Lieutenant General Luciano Portolano, JFC Naples Chief of Staff, and various briefers answered questions of the students during a round table discussion.
"I’m very happy to be here today. For the very first time in my life I have the chance to visit a NATO headquarters” said Martina Pia Esposito, an 18-year-old 5th year student. "I was wondering what this place is it as it inaccessible due to military restrictions. This visit gave me the opportunity to understand how NATO works to ensure peace and stability all over the worlds. Moreover, thanks to JFC Naples and its military and civilian staff of teaching me a lot today."
