Celebrating the Victory in Europe

NAPLES, Italy -- Victory in Europe Day marked the end of WWII in Europe with the official surrender of Germany’s armed forces to the Allied nations in 1945.

To remember the significance of this event, members of Allied Joint Force Command Naples gathered in the Headquarters on May 8th to listen to Admiral James Foggo, commander of JFC Naples, speak.

"It’s sometimes hard for us to imagine today the scale and breadth of WWII,” said Foggo. "It was the most global war in history that directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. It was the deadliest—estimates range from 50 to 85 million fatalities.”

With 29 nations in the NATO Alliance, the common goal of keeping Europe and subsequently the world, free and at peace is substantial. Having 22 of those nations represented at JFC Naples showcased how important the Alliance is to global security.

"Together, we are committed to European security and promoting peace in Europe and beyond,” said Foggo.
