JFC Naples member represents NATO at African Union workshop

MAPUTO, Mozambique – The African Union Commission conducted an After Action Review Workshop April 4-8, 2016, on last year’s "Amani Africa II” Field Training Exercise.

The AU Commission held the workshop to identify the successes during "Amani Africa II,” which took place at the Combat Training Center Lohatla in the exercise’s host nation, South Africa.

"The workshop served as a key milestone toward enabling Africa to be ready to address peace and security challenges on the continent in the future,” said the event’s chairman, the Head of AUC Peace Support Operations Division, Mr. Sivuyile Bam.

Approximately 100 participants came from the AU Commission (AUC), African Regional Economic Communities, the United Nations, European Union and NATO. Allied Joint Force Command Naples and NATO was represented by the training and exercise subject matter expert French Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Frederic Bertolozzi, who also participated in the "Amani Africa II” as an evaluator.

The workshop attendees summarized all challenges and proposed recommendations on how to enhance the African Stand-by Force (ASF) of the AU in the future. The event’s objectives contributed to the development of an ASF Five Year Work Plan (2016-2020), otherwise known as the "Maputo Plan.”

"The exercise demonstrated that the ASF has attained operational readiness, but will require further enhancement based on the implementation of this adopted Maputo Plan,” said the "Amani Africa II” Exercise Director, Retired Nigerian Army Major General Samaila Ilyia,

The scope of the After Action Review was heavily based on the observations and recommendations derived from the exercise by the evaluation team. On the basis of this review, participants noted that the field training exercise was successfully conducted in line with its objectives.
