Colonel Peter Helzer
Colonel Peter Helzer serves as the Brigade Commander of the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT). In this role, he leads one of the largest and most storied units in the Oregon National Guard, responsible for ensuring its readiness for both state and federal missions.
Beginning his military career in 1997, Helzer enlisted as a Cannon Crewman (13B) with Battery C, 2nd Battalion, 218th Field Artillery. After excelling in Officer Candidate School at the Oregon Military Academy, he earned his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery. His career has been marked by various leadership roles, including Support Platoon Leader, Battery Executive Officer, Battalion Operations Officer, and Commander of the 2nd Battalion, 218th Field Artillery.
Col. Helzer has deployed to Iraq during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM with the 41st IBCT. A decorated combat veteran, he has received honors including the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Combat Action Badge, and induction into the Honorable Order of St. Barbara. His leadership and operational expertise have been instrumental in both combat and peacekeeping missions.
Raised in Portland, Oregon, Helzer graduated from the University of Portland with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. He later earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College. In addition to his military career, Helzer serves as a Lieutenant in the Portland Police Bureau. He and his wife Jennye reside in Vancouver, Washington, where they remain active in community service through organizations like the Sunshine Division and Camp Rosenbaum.
