Colonel Christopher J. Samulski was raised in South Carolina and enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1995. He commissioned into the Infantry in 1997 from the South Carolina Officer Candidate School program. His first assignment was in Lexington, Virginia where he served as a Platoon Leader in Company B, 2d Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment. He would later serve as the Mortar Platoon Leader and S4 for the Battalion. COL Samulski commanded Company A, 3d Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment where he deployed his unit to Al Taqaddum, Iraq.
Upon returning from Iraq, he was then assigned to 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment where he served as the Operations Officer during the Battalion's deployment to Iraq. Following his completion of U.S. Command and General Staff College he was assigned to the 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team located in Staunton, Virginia where he served as the Operations Officer and then Executive Officer for the Brigade.
Chris then commanded the 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment located in Lynchburg, Virginia and deployed the unit to Qatar in support of Operation Spartan Shield. He was subsequently assigned to the 29th Infantry Division at Fort Belvoir as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations.
COL Samulski was then assigned to the 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team as the Deputy Commander and would later assume command of the Brigade on July 31st, 2020.
His professional military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic Course, the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from The Citadel and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
COL Samulski has deployed four times to include Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 2002 as the Executive Officer for Company A, 2d Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, Iraq in 2007 as the Commander of Company A, 3d Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, Iraq in 2010 as the Operations Officers for 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, and Qatar in 2016 as the Commander of 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment.
His awards and decorations include: the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal (3 OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (1 SOLC), the National Defense Service Medal (BSS), the Iraq Campaign Medal (2 BSS), the Global War on Terrorism-Expeditionary Medal (BSS), the Global War on Terrorism-Service Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal (BSS), the Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the Expert Infantryman Badge.
