Austrian KFOR EOD Team Conducts Safe WWII Bomb Detonation

PRISTINA - The Austrian Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team of the NATO-led KFOR mission carried out today a successful, controlled detonation of a bomb dating back to the Second World War, in Kaçanik.

The device, weighing 250 kg, was found by the local inhabitants of the area, near a river.

The preparation and execution of this activity were conducted in accordance with international standards to ensure the safety of the local community, under the direct supervision of the KFOR Commander, Major General Enrico Barduani.

Personnel of the Kosovo Security Forces (KSF) also followed this activity, as part of their training in accordance with their original mandate. The Kosovo Police cordoned the area.

EOD teams are made up of highly specialized personnel. They are well trained and equipped to safely handle unexploded ordnance and they are always ready to respond to requests for assistance in this domain.

KFOR continues to contribute to a safe and secure environment for all people and communities living in Kosovo, in accordance with its long-standing UN mandate – based on UN Security Council Resolution 1244 of 1999; at all times and impartially; and in close coordination with the Kosovo Police and the European Union Mission on Rule of Law in Kosovo (EULEX), in their respective roles as security responders.
