12th OCTOBER 2016. During a brief ceremony at "Paediatric Oncology in Kosovo", the cancer ward of Pristina’s Children’s hospital, a plaque was dedicated to the memory of Major Nicola Ciardelli killed on active duty in Iraq on April 27 of 2006.

The ceremony was attended by COMKFOR Major General Giovanni Fungo, the sister of Major Ciardelli, Federica - President of ''Associazione Nicola Ciardelli", the Kosovo Minister for Health Mr. Imet Rrahmani, the Italian Ambassador H.E. Piero Christopher SARDI, Dr. Lawrence Faulkner (scientific coordinator) of the Foundation "Cure2Children", the Deputy Mayor of Campi Bisenzio (FI) Eleonora Ciabellotti and by the medical and nursing staff of the hospital with the children recovered from male.

COMKFOR stated that "Italian soldiers, KFOR soldiers, when there is a child we stop to help them, support their families and local doctors”. He also added, "we have the mentality and the means to do it more quickly, no matter what is our mission for the world " and noting the competence of the Italian military in creating the atmosphere to facilitate this assistance. He concluded: "here there are the best resources of Italy: institutions, represented by the Ambassador, science, local communities, volunteering, that when we are abroad we are able to put together in order to get a result. We do this spontaneously, with ease and continue to do so in this manner".

The project, the restructuring of the Department of Haematology-Oncology Paediatric Pristina University Hospital, is a collaboration of the two associations, Ciardelli and Cure2Children with Gemelli Hospital in Rome, the Italian Embassy and the Italian KFOR military. In the last four years it has been established an active and effective medical unit which can offer a treatment for children suffering from paediatric conditions and be capable of assisting up to 40 families. This is a significant starting point, diagnostic and therapeutic improvements and leading to the continuous professional improvement of local doctors to achieve the implementation of global standards.
