INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MINE AWARENESS

04 APR 2016
Orahovac, Kosovo. Today, KFOR EOD units provided support to the Kosovo Security Force in the disposal of Explosive Remnants of War at the German Contingent Demolition Range at Orahovac.

On April 4 each year, the international community celebrates International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. In Kosovo, this day represents the start of the Humanitarian Demining season and the Mine Action Centre from Kosovo Security Force, with KFOR EOD assets in support, marked the event with a disposal activity.

Mines and explosive remnants of war constitute a serious threat to the safety, health and lives of the civilian population and are an impediment to social and economic development. This day raises awareness of the threat caused by landmines to the safety, health and lives of civilian populations.

Over sixty (60) items of ordnance were destroyed including: anti-tank mines, mortar rounds, hand grenades and rocket propelled grenades (RPG). The operation included EOD teams from the Kosovo Security Forces, Swiss, U.S., Moldovan and Ukraine armies.

Through activities such as explosive remnants of war disposal, KFOR continues to preserve a safe and secure environment and ensure freedom of movement for all people in Kosovo.
