SUB-COMMITTEE ON TRANSATLANTIC DEFENCE AND SECURITY CO-OPERATION OF NATO PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY VISITED KFOR HQ


On June 24th 2014, the Sub-Committee on Transatlantic Defence and Security Co-operation of NATO Parliamentary Assembly visited KFOR HQ.

Major-General Salvatore FARINA (COM KFOR) welcomed the Chairman of the Sub-Committee Mr. Sverre MYRLI, and Mr. Hugh BAYLEY the president with all the delegation, composed of 18 members, in Camp Film City in Pristina.

COM KFOR, Mr. MYRLI and Mr. BAYLEY discussed the general security and political situation, the latest development in Kosovo and in the Balkan area.

The main topics of the meeting were the improvement of the overall security situation in Kosovo, the early parliamentary elections held on June 08 during which KFOR contributed in close coordination with other security provider to guarantee a safe and secure environment, and also the situation in Mitrovica after the removal of the barricade and the building of the "Peace” garden.

Mr. MYRLI and Mr. BAYLEY took note of the progress achieved in Kosovo due to the contribution to stability and dialogue during the last months and they positively commented the performance of all the Security providers, Kosovo Police, EULEX and KFOR with particular reference to the demonstration in Mitrovica on June 22 when they avoided escalation of violence allowing the population to legitimately protest in a peaceful and democratic way expressing openly their opinion.

During the first day of the visit the Sub-Committee had the opportunity to visit some of the most important KFOR outposts in the North, Gate 1 and Camp Cabra where they received operative briefings from the Commanders deployed there.

On 25th June COMKFOR, Mr. MYRLI and Mr. BAYLEY had a meeting with the President of the Assembly of Kosovo, Mr. Jakup KRASNICI, with Kosovo Prime Minister Mr. Hashim TACHI, and with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Enver HOXHAJ.

All the Kosovo Institution high level representatives pointed out the great role played by KFOR and the continuous fruitful cooperation with the Local and Central Political Authorities.

During the afternoon a meeting was held in Camp Film City, where Major General FARINA welcomed Mr. CEKU, Minister for the Kosovo Security Forces and Lieutenant General KASTRATI, KSF Commander.
On 26th June the Sub-Committee, accompanied by Deputy Commander of KFOR, Brigadier General Anton WESSELY will meet with Mr. Bernd BORCHARDT, EULEX Head of Mission and with Mr. Farid ZARIF, UNMIK Special Representative of the Secretary General for KOSOVO.
