Ambassador Nicolaas H. Biegman (1936), Ph D., retired from Foreign Service of the Netherlands in October 1 st , 2001. His last position was Ambassador to NATO (1998-2001).
Prior to that he served as the Dutch Ambassador to the United Nations, New York (1992-1997) and in Egypt (19984-1988), and was in charge of the Dutch Foreign Aid Programme (1988-1992).
Dr. Biegman joined the Dutch Foreign Service in 1963, and served in Egypt , Australia , Tanzania and at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at The Hague . He was intimately involved in the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (1972-1977) and the UN Conference on Population and Development in Cairo (1994).
He studied Arabic, Turkish, Serbo-Croatian and International law at the University of Leiden . Ph D. Thesisi: The Turco-Ragusan relationship according to the Firmans of Sultan Murat III (1967).
Hobby: photography photo books on Egypt , Amsterdam New York and Haiti .
He is married and has two sons.
He took up his duties in Skopje on April 1 st 2002.
