Why is NATO in BIH?

NATO has a mission in BiH at the request of the authorities in BiH.

Our presence - a tangible symbol of the NATO Allies commitment to a secure and stable BiH – helps to ensure a safe environment- but we don't have an armed, standing military force in BiH. Our team consists solely of advisors (none of who routinely carry weapons) and support staff.

Our role is to provide advice and assistance to the authorities in BiH as they implement reforms to improve the effectiveness and capabilities of BiH defence institutions (which include the armed forces, Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Security), and to help coordinate the bi-lateral activities of our Allies (many of whom are very active in supporting BiH whether it's with advice, training or donations).
