Command Sergeant Major Steven D. Shepherd entered the United States Army from Lebanon, Ohio in November 1983.  He attended basic and advance training at the Field Artillery School in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Sergeant Major Shepherd’s Active Duty assignments include Fort Richardson, Alaska; Fort Knox, KY; Fort Benning, GA, and Bamberg, Germany. He spent seven years on Active Duty and enlisted in the Ohio Army National Guard in 1996 as a 19D Cavalry Scout.  He has served as Platoon Sergeant with B-Troop, 2-107th Cavalry, First Sergeant with C-Troop and B-Troop 2-107th Cavalry respectively and Reconnaissance Operations Sergeant Major for the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 216th Engineer Battalion Command Sergeant Major (2009-2011), 16th Engineer Brigade Command Sergeant Major (2011-2017).  In 2017, he was selected and assigned to NATO HQ, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader in October 2017.  
Sergeant Major Shepherd has a wide variety of combat and contingency experiences which include deployments in support of Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and Joint Guardian.
He has completed all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Education System and a graduate of the United States Army Sergeant’s Major Academy.  His awards included the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (Fourth Oak Leaf Cluster), Army  Commendation Medal (Fourth Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (Second Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Component Award, National Defense Service Medal, Kosovo and Iraqi Campaign Medals, Global War on Terrorism Service Award, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, NATO Non-Article V Medal (Kosovo), Basic Training and Overseas Ribbon, Ohio Faithful Service, Ohio Special Service, Ohio Award of Merit, Air-Assault badge, the Order of Saint George, and the Order of the Combat Spurs. 
 
Sergeant Major Shepherd and his wife Laura hail from Waynesfield, Ohio. Their daughter Stephanie is a 2007 University of Cincinnati graduate and resides in Austin, Texas with her family.
