Brigadier General William J. Edwards

U.S. Army Brigadier General William J. Edwards is the commander and senior military representative of NATO Headquarters Sarajevo at Camp Butmir, Bosnia-Herzegovina. His duties include advising the BiH authorities on military aspects of security sector reform and commanding all NATO forces operating in BiH.

NATO HQ Sarajevo provides advice and assistance to Host Nation authorities on the military aspects of defense reform in accordance with agreed priorities in the current Military Committee Direction and Guidance for Cooperation with BiH and as directed by the Allied Command Operations chain of command.

In his previous assignment, Edwards served as as Deputy Director for Operations, Mobilization Assistant at U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. He has served in the Army National Guard in Pennsylvania, New York and Oregon.
Edwards enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1985 before commissioning in 1990. He earned his Bachelors of Science in Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1990. He holds a Master’s of Science and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Engineering from Cornell University. He completed a Master’s of Strategic Studies in residence at the U.S. Army War College in 2011.
