Brigadier General MARTI J. BISSELL

Commander and Senior Military Representative at NATO Headquarters - Sarajevo

Brigadier General Marti J. Bissell’s duties include advising the Bosnia and Herzegovina government on defense reform and coordinating potential partnership for peace activities.

NATO HQ Sarajevo provides advice and assistance to Host Nation authorities on the military aspects of defense reform in accordance with agreed priorities in the current Military Committee Direction and Guidance for Cooperation with BiH and as directed by the Allied Command Operations

(ACO) chain of command. In her previous assignment, Brigadier General Bissell served as the National Guard Joint Staff Chief of Staff where she was responsible for coordinating staff functions and operations of the National Guard Joint Staff and Office of the Chief of the National Guard Bureau including coordinating personnel assignments; assigning tasks and projects; resolving conflicts of interest; monitoring results; ensuring the efficient stewardship of NGB resources and supporting the Chief's programs that assure health, welfare, and safety of nearly 455,000 members of the National Guard.

Brigadier General Bissell was commissioned in 1988 as a Second Lieutenant through the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at Oregon State University. Over the course of her career, BG Bissell has commanded at the company, battalion and brigade level, served at almost every organizational level and in all three components, Active, Guard and Reserve.

Served as the primary staff officer for the formulation of plans, policies, and the programming and budget pertaining to operations, training and security. Used initiative, knowledge, and judgment to resolve complex issues and situations within guidelines established by the Chief of Staff, TAG, Governor, NGB, and Department of Defense.
