NATO reaffirms long standing commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina

“BiH political leaders must work to preserve unity, build institutions and achieve reconciliation” NATO Secretary General said yesterday, as he started a tour of the Western Blakans with a visit to Sarajevo.

He highlighted the importance of reforming BiH institutions, an area in which NATO is increasing its practical support, which strengthens democracy, as well as reiterating NATO’s commitment to its open door policy, and supporting BiH’s Euro-Atlantic path.

Secretary General also commended BiH efforts to increase their armed forces ability to work with other countries, as demonstrated by the certification of the Light Infantry Battalion Group to NATO standards last year, and successful recent deployments to both Turkiye and Slovenia in response to requests for help following natural disasters.

A stable and secure Bosnia and Herzegovina and a peaceful Western Balkans are of strategic interest for the Alliance, Secretary General stressed, highlighting that NATO’s commitment to peace, security and prosperity to the region is steadfast

Secretary General commended the ongoing reforms Bosnia and Herzegovina has implemented in its defence sector, including across its Armed Forces – one of the country’s strongest multi-ethnic institutions. He further encouraged the country to take this important progress even further, stressing NATO’s steady commitment to a strong dialogue and practical cooperation with BiH as we move forward.
