Colonel Barış AKBAŞ was born in İzmir, Türkiye on the 6th of April
1976. He is married to Ebru with two daughters, İpek (17) and Öykü (5).
After graduating from military high school in 1994, he joined Turkish
Military Academy and graduated in 1998 as an infantry officer, as a
second lieutenant, with a degree of BA in System Engineering.
Then he accomplished one year long Infantry Officer Training Course and
served as platoon, and company commander in different units ranging from
mechanized infantry, inland security, recruitment's training to border
security. He also served as a battalion commander under the command of
Support Group Command of General Staff of Turkish Armed Forces in
During 2019-2021 he was assigned as one of the two Deputy Brigadiers
of the biggest Border Security Brigade of Turkish Army at the
Iraqi/Iranian Border which was responsible for the border security,
prevention of any terrorist infiltration and smuggling. During this
period, in addition to commanding five battalions he also held bilateral
meetings with his counterparts in Iraq and Iran on security issues and
protection of borders.
In addition to the field service, he worked at the Ministry of
National Defense Plans and Policy Division, located in Ankara, during
the period of 2013-2016. During this period he involved in issues
concerning security initiatives and organizations like Organization for
Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Treaty on Open Skies, South
Eastern Europe Defense Ministerial Process (SEDM), and also South
Eastern Europe Brigade (SEEBRIG). His center of gravity for his last two
years in MoD was on SEDM and SEEBRIG which are very important two
initiatives promoting regional
and good neighborly relations, strengthening regional
capabilities, and also establishing links
into Euro-Atlantic institutions in Balkan Region.
In addition to many other military training and courses, he has MA in
Defense and Security Management in Alparslan Defense Sciences Institute
of National Defense University in 2001.
His last assignment was to 3rd Corps Command (NATO Rapid
Deployable Corps-Türkiye/ NRDC-T) as Assistant Chief of Staff (ACOS) of
Assessment Branch under DCOS Plans Division.
His hobbies include swimming, trekking, radio-controlled model planes, and watching documentaries about space sciences.
